Another project proposed by the NLE would make Bonny Kingdom one of
the most important investment destinations in West Africa. The Bonny
Kingdom Masterplan looks to change Bonny Kingdom from the Nigerian
home of oil and gas into a diversified economy with low unemployment,
strong infrastructure, and improved quality of life for millions of skilled
workers. Bonny Kingdom is a coastal community in close proximity to Port
Harcourt giving it a strategic location for water trade both internationally and
internally. Bonny Island itself contains one of the country’s most industrialized
communities (Bonny Kingdom), mangrove forest, and some of the most fertile
farmlands in West Africa. The plan, alternatively named “Green Heart City,”
looks toward four goals for the development of Bonny Kingdom:
1. Human capital development
2. Economic expansion and diversification
3. Infrastructure development
4. Environmental sustainability
To accomplish these, the plan outlines affordable social amenities such as
schools; efficient commercial, residential, and industrial spaces; large use of
green space for recreation; efficient and sustainable land use for agriculture; as
well as the Bonny ring road that will circumnavigate the island, leaving at the
center a “green heart”da nature conservation area (NLE, 2014).
Nigeria is also tackling sustainable development with direct help from the
UN, the Sahara Group, the Nigerian government, and three of the world’s top
chefs. The new pilot initiative in Kaduna called Food Africa is aimed at job
