Making Your Visual Message Sizzle 313
time why this is so important and ultimately Daniel gets upset because he feels that he
is not learning karate, which was his purpose for working with Mr. Miyagi in the first
place. In a later scene, Mr. Miyagi shows Daniel that by using the same hand and arm
movements taught for waxing the vehicle, he had in fact learned and perfected several
                                protective karate moves.

                                Dead Poet’s Society
Throughout the movie, there are examples of creative teaching techniques involving
brain-based learning concepts. At one point, the professor jumps up onto a table and
gives a motivating speech to students. Such segments are good for reinforcing the power
of thinking outside the box and using unorthodox strategies for communicating your
message. Good for trainer development and presentation skills sessions.

                                Patch Adams
This video provides numerous examples of how being compassionate toward others,
taking a creative approach to work, and accepting personal responsibility gives great
returns in the workplace. In one scene, Patch (a doctor) goes into the wards of termi-
nally ill children and through a series of comedy and other humorous techniques raises
the spirits of children who have otherwise somber lives.

                                Roots (Episode 1)
In a series of five episodes, the life of captured slave Kunte Kinte and his successors is
detailed. In Episode 1, Kunte and another slave concoct a plan to communicate with the
100 plus slaves chained in the galley with them even though many spoke other lan-
guages. This is an excellent discussion generator for ways to use creativity, ingenuity, and
teamwork and for taking individual responsibility and leadership to plan and execute a
goal. Also, good for showing a creative alternative to intercultural communication.
                                Roots (Episodes 1 and 2)
There are numerous scenes in these episodes that show how Kunte Kinte established and
worked toward achieving a goal and vision (breaking free from slavery and returning to
his native Gambia, Africa). I use such examples to show the power of commitment to a
purpose and how self-determination can help people weather difficult situations. Also
good for emphasizing goal setting and moral courage.

                                GI Jane
The first female candidate in the tough Navy SEAL Team training program has to deal
with harassment, stereotypes, preconceived ideas about her abilities, and a demanding
physical and psychological work environment. Various segments in this video are good
for demonstrating personal leadership, commitment, goal setting, and motivation.
                                An Officer and a Gentleman
Similar to GI Jane, the lead character in this video has to face stressful events and pressures
to overcome personal challenges to reach his goal of becoming a U.S. Naval officer. Good
for goal setting, leadership, motivation, determination, and overcoming stereotypes.
