The prerequisites and credits in the Materials and Resources category can be grouped
into the following three overall sets of goals:
• MRp1 and the first four Materials and Resources credit subcategories (1 through 4)
all encourage the continued use, reuse, or recycling of materials or products to
decrease the use of more raw materials and decrease the impact to the waste
disposal stream.
• The two credits in the Materials and Resources subcategory 5 encourage the use
of materials or products that do not require long transportation distances to
reach the site. This reduces the negative environmental impacts of transportation
and increases sustainability in the area.
• The Materials and Resources subcategories 6 and 7 encourage stewardship in
the use of products made from renewable materials, particularly promoting
rapidly renewable materials in MRc6.
The one prerequisite and the seven credit subcategories (including the two sections
in the first subcategory) in the Materials and Resources category for LEED 2009 are as
follows:
• MR Prerequisite 1 (MRp1): Storage and Collection of Recyclables
• MR Credit 1.1 (MRc1.1): Building Reuse—Maintain Existing Walls, Floors, and Roof
• MR Credit 1.2 (MRc1.2): Building Reuse—Maintain Existing Interior Non-
Structural Elements
• MR Credit 2 (MRc2): Construction Waste Management
• MR Credit 3 (MRc3): Materials Reuse
• MR Credit 4 (MRc4): Recycled Content (EB)
• MR Credit 5 (MRc5): Regional Materials (EB)
• MR Credit 6 (MRc6): Rapidly Renewable Materials (EB)
• MR Credit 7 (MRc7): Certified Wood (EB)
LEED-NC 2.2 and 2009 provide tables which summarize some of these prerequisite
and credit characteristics, including the main phase of the project for submittal
document preparation (Design or Construction). Even though the entire LEED
process encompasses all phases of a project, the prerequisites or credits which are
noted as Construction Submittal credits may have major actions going on through
the construction phase, which, unless documented through that time, may not be
able to be verified from preconstruction documents or the built project. Sometimes
these credits have activities associated with them that cannot or need not be
performed until or subsequent to the construction phase. All the Materials and
Resources credits have been included in the construction submittal column and are
thus noted in Table 5.0.1.
Four of the credit subcategories listed in Table 5.0.1 have the icon EB noted after
their title (Recycled Content, Regional Materials, Rapidly Renewable Materials, and
Certified Wood). This icon is a tool to help those who wish to proceed with the continuing
LEED-EB certification (Existing Building) after certification of LEED-NC is obtained.
Those credits noted with this icon are usually significantly more cost-effective to
