But when the tsunami hit South Asia in 2004, we in this country were exposed to
pictures of widespread natural devastation and untold numbers of people who sud-
denly found themselves without homes, without families. Those images spoke to me
in a way that is hard to describe. I was struck then by how fortunate we are in this
country, and how we need to make the most of what we have bountifully been pro-
vided. And so, in our mid-fifties, my wife and I decided to adopt a three-year-old girl
from China, whom we named Caroline. Many of my friends and colleagues in the real
estate world said we were crazy to start a family again, just when our two sons were
headed off to college. My colleagues at work, however, seemed to understand and
proved deeply supportive.
It’s probably a cliché, but Caroline has been a gift to us, not the reverse. She is a
constant, daily reminder that providing for others resonates with a sense of meaning
and purpose that is beyond measure. It is probably no accident that our brokerage divi-
sion began to embrace sustainability in earnest about the time my wife and I adopted
Caroline. Here we were, inventing a new life at home, our own game as it were,
despite the nay-sayers and skeptics around us.
So, too, our brokerage division has begun a journey that is largely of our own inven-
tion. It’s not always easy. The other real estate professionals in our community were
