THAT DETERMINE
EFFECTIVENESS
So to be a player, you need to evaluate, interpret, translate, and proj-
ect (more on projection later).

A good translator is like a good surgeon—excising unwelcome
elements with a steady hand and executing every move with
precision and economy.

Translation enables the metamorphosis from information to knowl-
edge. To translate effectively, you have to ask questions:
◆ What does this really mean?
◆ Why is this important?
◆ What should I really be saying here?
◆ What is the point?
◆ Does this add anything?
◆ Am I speaking in a language everyone can understand?
◆ Am I using examples that fi t?
◆ Who really cares?
If you can’t answer these questions, you are doing yourself and your
audience a disservice.
Even worse, if you can’t answer these questions, you might resort
to the unthinkable and unload a data dump. Shame on you if
you do.
THE FOUR As
Ask the right questions and the truth will come out. You may be
able to see situations and trends you didn’t see before. You will force
