Chapter Summary and Conclusions

The following conclusions can be drawn from the previous discussion on
green IT:

■ Data center cooling technology will continue to grow in importance
because about half the energy in a data center goes to cooling.
■ Water-cooled systems will continue to make a comeback because the
thermodynamics of cooling greatly favors liquid over air from a heat
transfer efficiency standpoint.
■ New technologies for cooling, including the use of fuel cells, imbedded
cooling, and chip-level cooling, will continue to evolve.
■ Cooling will continue to play an important role in the new solutions and
processes to address the data center energy situation from end to end. The
solutions cover the spectrum from the server end through power manage-
ment features and at the data center ends through integrated IT/facilities
modular solutions.
