104 Thermal Hydraulics Aspects of Liquid Metal Cooled Nuclear Reactors

Anyway, it should be stressed that what has been discussed in the chapter is just a
limited part of the work. In particular, in the conceptualization phase of a liquid-metal
facility, several items shall be accounted for, such as instrumentation setup, filling and
drain operation, coolant conditioning, coolant chemistry control and monitoring,
replacement and/or maintenance of the main components, flexibility on system design
to allow future modifications and improvements, and space management (for exper-
imental setup refurbishment, etc.). All these items could have a strong impact in the
achievement of the final results, and if not well accounted for, they can jeopardize the
         allocated efforts.
Finally, it shall be mentioned that, even if the conceptual design is a task for
research bodies/institutes, especially for a large experimental facility with prototyp-
ical components (i.e., fuel pin simulator and steam generator bayonet tubes, never
constructed before), the involvement of industrial partners from the very beginning
is of paramount importance to properly manage the whole project, defining the sched-
ule, allocating the budget and human resources, identifying the industrial supply
chain, defining the procurement schedule, defining the installation, and commission-
         ing phases.
