10.4.28 GROUNDWATER MONITORING AND CORRECTIVE ACTION
The U.S. EPA landfill criteria establish requirements for groundwater monitoring and corrective
action for all landfills. The criteria include a systematic process that requires routine groundwater
monitoring (“detection monitoring”). In detection monitoring, a minimum number of indicator
parameters must be tested at least annually. Figure 10.27 depicts a typical groundwater monitoring
well. If statistically significant increases above background concentrations of any of the indicator
parameters are detected, a more comprehensive monitoring program must be instituted. If evaluated
concentrations of pollutant parameters continue or increase, the facility is then required to develop
and implement a corrective action program (U.S. EPA, 1994).
