116 What Type of Leader Are You?

        Development Stretches for Threes

TAKE THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW THE BUSINESS Even though
Three leaders learn quickly, knowing the business is a complex
undertaking. To get a firm grounding in the business, give your-
self three times as long as you expect to need. Once you have
this deep understanding, you will be able to view environmen-
tal and organizational changes within their larger context, allow-
ing you to be even more effective at adjusting goals when you
        take action.

SET THE VISION, CLARIFY THE MISSION, FORMULATE THE STRATEGY,
AND LEAD FROM ALL THREE When you lead from goals rather than
from vision, mission, and strategy, your success will be limited to
the goals you have set. However, when your leadership comes
from vision, mission, and strategy, those who work for and with
you will be equipped with the tools they need to reformulate
goals and drive tactics. This will create less dependence on you
for direct involvement in day-to-day activities, and more will be
        accomplished.

COMMUNICATE WITH EVERYONE FREQUENTLY The more the people
who work for you understand the business, the more effective they
will be. Take the time to inform and enlist people at all levels of
the organization. Doing so will motivate others and help them be
        better performers.

Leaders create organizations that give people
meaning and purpose so that they are inspired to
                        do excellent work.
