204 What Type of Leader Are You?
ship qualities. Then review each column. Do you have more names
in the positive column, more in the negative, more in the mixed,
or some other pattern? For each individual in the positive column,
write down some of his or her negative qualities; for each individ-
ual in the negative column, write down some of his or her positive
qualities. Then write down your own name, listing your positive
and negative leadership traits. You will find that most leaders have
both positive and negative attributes.
SAY POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF TO YOURSELF You may have
a tendency to underestimate yourself and to understate your posi-
tive qualities. Write down all your positive attributes, both as a leader
and as a person. Put at least 20 items on this list. Pick one item each
day to focus on and to appreciate in yourself. Look in the mirror a
minimum of three times per day and say out loud: I really like that
I am . . . (fill in the blank with your word or phrase of the day).
ASK FOR POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS Don’t go fishing for com-
pliments, but do seek genuine positive feedback in order to under-
stand how others perceive your favorable attributes. During the first
week, select three people whom you know well and respect, and ask
each of them to give you one item of positive feedback regarding
something they believe you might not know about yourself. Write it
down. During the second week, select three more individuals and
follow the same process. Continue this for two more weeks so that
you have at least 12 items of positive feedback. Review these nightly
to remind and encourage yourself to appreciate your assets.
