236 What Type of Leader Are You?
Prior to joining her current company, Beth had spent 10
years working as a consultant in a large consulting firm.
After a year with that firm, Beth wanted to leave. She did not
respect the owner, she felt limited by the firm’s rules on how
consultants must function with clients, and she detested the
constant firm meetings. Still, she also reasoned that the
money was good, the firm had prestige, and she didn’t know
what else was available. She would have to research her
options, but the time she had for doing so was limited by her
workweek of 50+ hours. Beth worked unhappily in the firm
for eight more years, until she finally realized that she was
relying solely on logic and ignoring her heart. This had
immobilized her and prevented her from taking action.

Head Center Objective analysis
Remember that logical analysis is not necessarily
objective; logic can have its own bias, depending on the
logic used.
Astute insight
Make sure your insights include information about feelings
as well as facts.
Productive planning
Don’t overplan or overstrategize; remember, it is not
always possible to know everything before you develop a
plan.
Heart Center Empathy
Learn to feel your own feelings in real time, not after the
fact. This will enable you to read other people’s feelings
more accurately and to use this information in decision
making.
Authentic relating
Create fewer communication barriers between yourself
and others; people will then give you more truthful
information.
