246 What Type of Leader Are You?
After the success of the efforts described earlier, Renee
decided to use both consultants in her practice area. Peter,
the business development consultant, was hired to develop a
comprehensive business development plan; Sandy, the lead-
ership consultant, was hired to help Renee reorganize her 75-
person practice group, with a focus on efficiency and
customer service.
Sandy then learned—and told Renee—that the business
development consultant was planning a major reorganiza-
tion based on business development needs. Sandy advised
Renee that the two different reorganizations based on
different goals—one on efficiency and client service, and the
other on business development—needed to be coordinated
or the consultants would be working at cross-purposes.
Because Renee was busy and had little time for direct
involvement, she decided to continue with the business
development reorganization only. The result was that Renee
ended up with an organization design that was too expen-
sive to implement and that actually hurt current client rela-
tionships because too few resources were allocated to
current client work.
