FOCUS AS MUCH ON THE WORK OBJECTIVES AS YOU DO ON PEOPLE
Because you will always be sensitive to people’s personal needs,
it is important that you shift your emphasis and focus equally on
work objectives. This will enable people to work more independ-
ently of you, and it will allow you to feel less obliged to make
everything okay for everyone else.
HAVE THE COURAGE TO DELIVER TOUGH NEWS People need to
know where they stand, even at times when they are under duress,
whether for personal or work-related reasons. Be kind, clear, and
compassionate, but make sure you do not withhold negative infor-
mation from people. Give constructive feedback.
DON’T OVEREXTEND YOURSELF Do you know when you are
overextending yourself to the point of exhaustion? When you’re
exhausted, you will not be performing at your best, and you may
also react in ways that create barriers between you and others.
Make sure you consider yourself as well as other people, acknowl-
edging that you have needs for rest and support, and that you
expect—and accept—that others can and will step up to tasks.
