THE PYRAMID’S
SECOND TIER
“Discipline yourself and others won’t need to.”
he previous chapter focused on the foundation blocks of
Tmy Pyramid of Success—Industriousness, Enthusiasm, Friend-
ship, Loyalty, and Cooperation. You may agree that this is a strong
lineup for your starting five. I view these five personal qualities as
being essentially values of the heart and spirit, less cognitive than
those that make up the second tier, which is the focus of this
chapter.
What follows is less about heart and more about the head; more
specifically, how you put your head to use as an effective leader. I
chose four traits for the Pyramid’s second tier that primarily involve
control and direction of your mental faculties. For many, the first
block is the most challenging.
SELF-CONTROL
Getting to the top, even once, is arduous. Staying there, many say,
is even more difficult. My own experience is that both getting there
and staying there present unique and formidable challenges. To do
either requires great Self-Control.
