So, why did Edward Said become a cause celebre while Tibawi,
Hichem, Alatas and others remain largely ignored? For one thing, the
location of these writers was important. Tibawi was working in the
relatively obscure field of Islamic studies. Djait wrote in Arabic and
lived in Tunis, although his work was translated first into French and
later into English. Alatas was located in Singapore and doing
unfashionable sociology from a Third World perspective.
