The most trenchant criticism of Said came from the British
anthropologist Ernest Gellner (1926-95), with whom Said had a long-
running battle, and the Indian Marxist scholar Aijaz Ahmad. Gellner
argued that just because something is a product of imperialism, it
does not mean that it is wrong or unjust, any more than something
being non-colonial makes it right...
