Its amorphous
character means
that almost
anything can be,
and often is,
justified as
"cultural studies".
There seems to be
little or no quality
control. Moreover,
certain segments
of cultural studies I
appear to strive
towards banality. It
is one thing to
study popular
culture. It is quite
another to
romanticize junk
and give it
academic
respectability.
Meaningless
"textual criticism"
of music videos,
pop culture and
youth style is
undermining the
importance of
cultural studies
and the

groundbreaking
work already
achieved in the
field.
