• Are most of the people in your network people whom
you’ve known for a long time or whom you work with
on a daily basis, or are they a combination of people
inside and outside your organization who come from
different walks of life, with different experiences, per-
spectives, and professions?
• Does your network include people at a more senior
level as well as peers and direct reports?
• Is it diversified by age, gender, nationality, race,
industry, geography, and other such factors?
• Does it include both long-term and short-term rela-
tionships?
• How many folks did you reach out to in order to orig-
inally build the relationship, and how many reached
out to you?
• What are you doing to maintain these relationships?
Do you make a conscious effort to stay in touch with
people, or is it “out of sight, out of mind” for you?
• What would you like to do to reconnect with some of
these folks?
Now, I want you to think outside the box and consider
people who are not currently in your network. Think beyond
the group of people who are already committed to you and
have been there for you in the past, and think beyond your
potential network to identify people who can do one of two
specific things for you: they can show you a very different
