consider people both inside and outside of your specific
organization. Be creative when you are thinking about ways
to cultivate these relationships, and consider who else
might be able to help you make the initial connection.
Here is a simple framework for developing an action plan.
• What is your goal? What do you want to achieve?
What will success look like?
• What do you need help doing?
• Who can best help you? (Consider several people.)
• Do you need to form a new relationship with each
of these people or just reconnect with each so as to
deepen or broaden your current relationship?
• What is the value in cultivating and sustaining these
relationships? (Consider both the short term and the
long term.)
• What specifically do you want each person to agree to
do? (This can be as simple as getting to know each other
or as complex as writing a recommendation for you!)
• What do you commit to do to engage each person?
What are the specific actions that you will take, and
by when?
When you are developing your action plan, think realis-
tically about when you will be able to make time to focus on
each individual. Also, try to put one person on the list who
