incorrect. This not only causes a great deal of confusion and
frustration but also results in a significant lack of produc-
tivity. So, be sure to get some reliable feedback on your
effectiveness in the basics. Then begin to hone your com-
munication skills and techniques in order to make your
words count when you are delivering those other messages.
By now you’ve read about many of these important mes-
sages in previous chapters. We’ve covered the importance
of being able to share a vision that resonates with others
and being able to express your true self by being emotion-
ally expressive. In this chapter, I’d like to drill down in both
of these areas. Then I’ll cover several other key aspects of
awesome communication, including how to

• Adapt your style to your audience.
• Listen with intention.
• Have those difficult conversations that you’ve been
putting off.

Why is it important that you be able to do these other
things well? That’s easy. Being a resilient leader means
being able to move people and projects forward in spite of
obstacles and challenges. And, more than anything else,
these communication secrets are the tools and techniques
that enable us to do that: inspire action, speak from your
heart, adapt your style, listen with intention, and don’t avoid
the hard conversations.
