• Identify an area that gives you tremendous energy and
fulfillment. Ask yourself where your natural passions lie
when you are making contributions to this area. What
personal and professional strengths have you blended
in these experiences? What can you do now to leverage
those same strengths to forward your purpose?
• Begin to formulate your “purpose” statement. Say it
out loud to yourself until describing it becomes natu-
ral, and then share it with close friends and colleagues.
Here are a few examples to help you get started:
– “To be a positive and supportive teacher of young
children.”
– “To be a change agent for my organization in
order to enable the people and the organization to
get through these hard times successfully.”
– “To be of service to my community by addressing
the needs and challenges of people who are less
fortunate than I.”
– “To be the most caring, supportive, and helpful
friend, colleague, parent, or spouse that I can be.”
