what they are doing. Involve people by having them share
their thoughts and feelings about the positive outcomes of
their efforts. Then have them prioritize the list and come
up with a shared meaning of what success would look like
based on the purposes that have been identified. Having a
sense of purpose within your organization or team is key to
maintaining both commitment and focus. It keeps people
engaged in their day-to-day work. It also serves as a com-
pass when the team is getting off track in a meeting, a
strategy session, or its daily activities.

PURPOSE FORWARD
Some people who are clear about their purpose in life have
a problem with taking action in order to realize it. It’s all
about being focused and intentional. In his book A Woman
in Charge, Carl Bernstein states, “As a girl and then as a
women, Hillary has almost always been desperate to be a
passionate participant and at the center of events: familial,
generational, experiential, political, historical. Call it ambi-
tion, call it the desire to make the world a better place—she
has been driven. Rarely has she stepped aside voluntarily
into passivity.”
