Part Modeling









                                                      2.64.  - Now  that  the  model  is  finished,  we  can  easily  determine  its  physical


                                                      properties, such as Weight, Volume, Center of Mass and Moments of Inertia.


                                                      SOLIDWORKS  includes  a  built-in  material  library  with  many  different  metals,



                                                      alloys, plastics, woods, composite materials and others like air, glass and water.






                                                                        The library includes these materials' mechanical and thermal properties:







                                                               •  Mass density


                                                               •  Elastic and Shear modulus



                                                               •  Tensile, Compressive and Yield strengths


                                                               •  Poisson's ratio



                                                               •  Thermal expansion coefficient


                                                               •  Thermal conductivity



                                                               •  Specific heat






                                                                        These  properties  are  also  used  by SOLIDWORKS  to  determine a  part's


                                                                       weight or determine  if a  component will  fail  under a  given  set of loading



                                                                        conditions using SimulationXpress (the built in structural analysis software).






                                                                        Since we made our part based  on  a template with  a  pre-defined  material


                                                      (Cast Alloy  Steel),  the  material  is  already defined.  To change  the  component's



                                                      material,  right-mouse-click on the material's name in  the FeatureManager, or if a


                                                      material  has  not  been  assigned,  in  the  "Material"  icon  in  the  FeatureManager


                                                      select "Edit Material" or pick one from the list of favorites listed. The list of favorites


                                                      can  be changed selecting the "Manage Favorites" option from the pop-up menu,


                                                      or in  the  "Favorites" tab  in  the Materials library.  Select "Edit Material" to see the



                                                      material properties that are defined. Click "Apply" to accept the material and Close


                                                      the library.
