Keeping the People
Who Keep Your
Business in Business
here are two important management issues that are closely
Tinterconnected: employee retention and employee morale.
If people are bailing out of the organization right and left, you
can bet that employee morale is suffering. And if employee
morale is pitifully low, it’s a sure thing that people are looking
for jobs elsewhere.
As a manager, you’ve probably experienced something sim-
ilar to this scenario. After months of searching, you find some-
one who you think is going to be the perfect team leader for
your marketing group, who will fire up the others and lead the
way for the team to achieve all the goals in the marketing plan.
So you schmooze this candidate, hire her, train her, and give the
ultimate pep talk to your marketers about the great new person
coming on board. When she does, she’s in the position only
three months before discovering what she believes to be green-
er pastures at Bigger Carrot, Inc. And poof! Say goodbye to Ms.
Perfect-for-the-Marketing-Job and say hello to a team morale
problem.
