See the Vision

In the late 1970s, I had an out-of-body experience
standing in the middle of Olsen Field at College

Station, Texas. It was the first inning of a nine-inning
game under the lights—the second half of a
doubleheader between the Chaparrals of Lubbock
Christian University and the Aggies of Texas A&M.
I was on the mound preparing to pitch in the most

important game of my career.
In my mind, it was a game of biblical
proportions—a clear case of David against Goliath.

The Texas A&M team was superb: a perennial
NCAA Division I powerhouse. Lubbock Christian
was superb, as well: a perennial NAIA contender,
but smaller and limited in its depth of talent.
