Knowing Players from Fans
First, in a culture-driven, people-centered organi-
zation, it is the leader’s responsibility to remove
impostors—to get the fans off the floor. Unfortunately,
not everyone will move back to the curve’s left-hand
side. Leaders cannot allow a small number of fans to
change the course of the game or distract the players
from successfully attaining the team’s goals.
Second, everyone creeps over to the right-hand side
of the curve from time to time, but most of us choose
not to stay there. When we find ourselves distracted,
the answer to getting back on the positive side of the
graph is to refocus and re-embrace the vision—this is

the key, the answer. The vision is everything when it =
comes to moving team members from ineffectiveness
to effectiveness. Culture-driven, people-centered organ-
izations never stop talking about their vision.
Dr. Jones’s discovery validates what should be
apparent to anyone who has spent any time in the
business world. Selfish pride can destroy us all if we
allow it. In every stage of the life-cycle curve’s road to
total disengagement, selfishness and prideful thinking
are present.
