Knowing Players from Fans

               First, in a culture-driven, people-centered organi-
zation, it is the leader’s responsibility to remove

impostors—to get the fans off the floor. Unfortunately,
not everyone will move back to the curve’s left-hand
side. Leaders cannot allow a small number of fans to

change the course of the game or distract the players
from successfully attaining the team’s goals.
Second, everyone creeps over to the right-hand side
of the curve from time to time, but most of us choose
not to stay there. When we find ourselves distracted,

the answer to getting back on the positive side of the
graph is to refocus and re-embrace the vision—this is
                                                                  87

             to effectiveness. Culture-driven, people-centered organ-
izations never stop talking about their vision.
Dr. Jones’s discovery validates what should be
apparent to anyone who has spent any time in the

business world. Selfish pride can destroy us all if we
allow it. In every stage of the life-cycle curve’s road to
total disengagement, selfishness and prideful thinking

             are present.
Sadly, in a numbers-oriented world, such issues
often fail to capture the interest of senior leaders, ana-
lysts, or shareholders because these people have no
