Foreword

community of people who share a common vision
and set of values that serve as guidelines in all deci-

sion making and that make everyone accountable to
everyone else. In short, culture driven. Gone are the
days when the person at the top takes responsibility

to establish the vision and communicate the values
             and then continuously “communicate, communi-
cate,” “sell, sell,” “incentivize, incentivize” around
that vision and set of values. Instead, this vision, this
purpose, this mission, these values, become impreg-

something that is handed down from above. It is part
of the social ecology. Everyone possesses this value
system and common belief about working toward a
shared vision and mission to serve, and they treat

each other based upon the natural laws or principles
that create sustainability. Leadership then becomes
shared and is part of the culture. Different people

serve different needs in different ways because of their
unique talents and gifts and strengths. Ultimately you
reach a point where you have a blended social ecol-
ogy, a culture of complementary teams whose
