Preface







                     hat you are about to read is a story of
             W experiential discovery. From growing up

             around an authentic cowboy on a West Texas ranch
             to piloting a high-performance jet to altitudes above
             70,000 feet, it is an account that reveals a valuable les-

             son regarding leadership: culture and people, not Wall
             Street and investors, create sustainability.
               The stories in Built to Serve remind us that seeking
             a higher purpose ultimately leads to personal growth,
             professional fulfillment, and success in life. Many of

             the stories are of familiar events, organizations, or
             institutions—Southwest Airlines, NASA, Air Force
             One, and Watergate. But some of the names may be

             less familiar. For example, names like Lubbock Chris-
