to the team member’s office or home.

to be of interest to a team member. Write a
short, personal note on the inside cover, and
send the book through the mail to the team
member’s home.

concession items.
10. Select a clothier to provide a team member with
a custom-tailored outfit.

In each of these examples, the thought and the mem-
ory are far more important than the actual cash com-
pensation. Our leadership team voted in 2005 to meet
with every person in the company, say “thank you,” and
hand that person a crisp $100 bill. We covered the tax
so the team member did not have to worry about it. We
had team members throughout the company comment
afterward that it was the most meaningful day of their
careers, not because of the cash, but because of the per-
sonal word of thanks that accompanied the payout.
