The biggest derailer to having your home life in check is that you
have a set of personal needs that inhibit you from functioning at a high
level; you have a self-discipline issue. You lack self-control with the oppo-
site sex, booze, food, golf, steroids, gambling, pets, money, ego, debt, or
drug abuse. (The United States, with less than 5 percent of the world’s
population, consumes more than half its drugs.)
You will be derailed if you pursue a path that gives you no personal
happiness. If you’re not happy in your work, you’ll bring that dissatisfac-
tion into your home time, as well as your work time.
Like confidence, integrity, the work you do, the risks you take, and
the ambition you have—it’s your choice. Sadly, many divorces have
occurred with CEOs, C-level executives, sales people, secretaries, and
janitors because all parties weren’t on the same page. The sooner you get
on and stay on the same page, the more work/life satisfaction you’ll enjoy,
the better example you’ll set, and the healthier you’ll be to continue to
pursue your passions. It’s one vicious cycle—that you control.
