               sent in both areas maximum shelf inundation. Work by Heckel and Cocke (1969)
               and  Harbaugh  (1964)  has  described  these  as  consisting  of  both  Archeolitho-
               ph yllum (encrusting platy red algae) and the familiar codiacean? platy genera. The
               accumulations in Kansas are flat lenses of phyUoid algal wackestone with numer-
               ous spar-filled cavities. They are only 3- 10 m thick, tens ofkm wide and separated
               by channels. Lateral slopes are gentle except at sides  of channels where a  maxi-
               mum  of  25 m  relief  appears.  The  channels  cross  the  presumed  strike  of  the
               mound-bearing strata. They may be 1- 2 km wide and one has been  traced as far
