hope you are now convinced that trying to motivate
employees with “carrots” will not increase the overall
Ihuman capital of your organization. How then do we cre-
ate employees who make things happen? In this chapter, you
will learn the important distinction between motivation and
employee engagement, why you should stop trying to motivate
employees altogether and focus on engaging them, the benefits
of having an engaged workforce, and the factors that impact
employee engagement. In addition, we will discuss current
research findings as well as the widespread misunderstanding
and invalid measurement of engagement. Let’s begin by clearly
defining employee engagement and distinguishing it from
motivation.
