Table 1.4 details the birthplace of the wives of the new rich and cadres. Almost three-
quarters of the wives of the new rich were born in the same place as their husbands.
‘Place’ in this case is operationalised as town or county. While these are fairly broad
operational categories, later evidence will indicate the narrowness of the identification
rather than its breadth. For all categories of the new rich, except that of state sector
managers, the majority of wives were born in the same place as their husbands. Even for
the category of state sector managers the proportion is only just under half. This and other
