It is evident from these results that educational level is reflected in career position. A
distinction can be made, however, between those working in hospitality and
entertainment with those working in the business and commerce sectors. This distinction
will be discussed later when I consider the responses to the question of networking and
the perceived personal qualities needed to succeed in a particular job. From meeting with
women working in bars, nightclubs and restaurants, I have learnt that personality is
believed to play a key role in success in these sectors, while education was not seen as so
important for a career in the hospitality industry. The ability to network, as well as a
certain degree of self-assurance and persistence, appear to have been common traits
amongst all the women working in hospitality and entertainment. Networking will be
seen to be of vital importance to a woman’s success and progress in any career.
