For every stage of your life, there are things that you’ll find
more enjoyable. Studying French was impossible when I was
exhausted and brain-dead from breast-feeding through the night.
In a few years, it may be fun again, but for now, it isn’t even on the
list. I’ve got that roughly penciled in for when I’m about sixty-five
and I take a year off to live in Paris, paint, study French, and laze
around playing the Bohemian.
The point of this exercise is to see that yes, you can have it
all, just not all at once! Now take the things you definitely want
to do in your life from the preceding list and jot them down in
the decade that seems most appropriate for your life. Don’t worry
about getting this perfect as things will most certainly change.
Things you think are interesting when you are twenty may have
no appeal at all when you are sixty. And things are changing so
quickly that there may be activities or options you can’t conceive
of now that will be available in the future. So just sketch in a rough
outline of the things you really want to make sure you do in this
life and when you’d like to do them. (I’ve filled in the background
to get you started, but feel free to change it.) Alternatively, you can
skip this step if it seems too hard and simply make a visual map of
your life plan instead.
