Forgive those who have harmed you, pay off any personal debts, apol-
ogize for any harm done—whether intentional or not—get off that
committee, resign from volunteer jobs you no longer enjoy, etc.

Under each big goal (or on the flip side of the index card), jot down five to
ten possible ways you could achieve each goal. You may wish to declare a
theme for the year that would guide your choices and actions. You might
choose to set a theme for “fun and adventure” if things have gotten a
bit dull lately, or “romance” to strengthen your love and relationships,
or “health and vitality” if you are feeling run down. Align your theme to
one of your top core values and you can’t go wrong. Select whichever
theme most inspires you. Then when you make decisions about whether
or not to do something over the course of the year, you can ask yourself
if it is aligned with your chosen theme. (After giving birth to my second
daughter and breast-feeding for months, my husband and I decided we
needed to declare a year for fun!)
Create a Visual Map of Your Life Plan
If you are struggling with the previous exercise, or it seems
entirely impossible and you just can’t imagine in which decade
you’ll be doing what, then try this instead. In fact, even if you have
done the above exercise, do this one as well if it appeals to you.
