Human Resources Processes with ERP
HUMAN RESOURCES WITH ERP SOFTWARE
Now that you are familiar with the numerous business processes required to manage a
company’s human capital, you can begin thinking about how ERP software can improve
those processes—leading to overall improvements in a company’s performance. With an
integrated system, a company can store employee information electronically, eliminating
the piles of papers and files that make the retrieval of information difficult. A good
information system allows human resources staff members to retrieve relevant employee
information in a matter of seconds and to maintain proper controls so sensitive information 167
is not compromised and privacy rules are not violated. An integrated information system is
a key component in this process.

Data Analytics for Enhancing Performance and
Recruiting in Professional Sports
An organization’s human resources department is typically responsible for a large amount
of data, and sports teams are no exception. Many teams collect and analyze huge volumes
of data in hopes of improving player performance and recruiting high-quality players.
Recently, Gartner Research named data analytics one of the most important “strategic
technologies” in 2011, and the London Irish rugby club can attest to that. During games,
the team collects video data (including GPS data) to analyze factors such as distances run
and the g-force of various tackles. Injury analysis can be correlated with this rich data set
to teach players to use techniques that will minimize the potential for injury. This rich
data set not only aids in future game direction but also helps in training. However, the
business director of the team, Chris Miles, adds a caveat, “You can’t use analytics to
replace judgment—it supports it.” The Manchester City football (soccer) club also uses
data analytics to assess performance during game play. The club measures about 180
actions during a game, but it does not rely solely on data analysis. As with the rugby team,
coach intuition supersedes any data result.
In England, players are often traded from football club to another, in hopes of
improving a team’s performance. Trading is common because of the heavy pressure on
clubs to win. Hence football clubs spend a large amount of money obtaining top
experienced players. In hopes of nurturing new, younger players, and alleviating some of
the enormous expense of trading experienced players, a new rule—called the Home
Grown Player rule— has been enacted by the England’s top football league. This requires
teams to have at least eight players that have been with the team for three seasons
starting before that player turned 21. With fewer opportunities to improve teams through
trades, teams must make better recruiting decisions to be successful. Prozone, a software
tool accessed through the cloud, allows teams to analyze performance data on players
and perform what-if analyses on potential trades. It takes football performance data—
such as video, shots, percentage passes, tackles won, along with age and nationality, and
uses statistics to determine performance ratings. Prozone markets the product as
“recruiter software.”
