Editing for Moving Pictures

Legendary educational reformer John Dewey held a strong belief in
“learning by doing.” The students at the Chicago school he and his wife,
Alice, ran learned as much chemistry, physics, and biology by cooking
meals as they did in the laboratory setting. Dewey’s ideas regarding the
importance of practically based learning remain a valuable part of our
learning system today.
Digital video editing requires an approach that mirrors the “learning
by doing” process. Therefore, the majority of this chapter will have a
“hands-on” feel as we give you a “walk-through” on how to engage in
the process of digital video editing. While you can learn a great deal
from this chapter, you will learn even more if you use it in connection
with the Final Cut Pro editing system.
Before we begin learning about editing, however, we provide you
with a brief review of the history of digital editing and some preparation
you can undertake as you gather the material you plan to edit.
