11 How senior
management
can make the
crisis worse
Crisis plans are likely to
fail without the full
participation of the board
Stuart Hyslop (United Kingdom)
Introduction
The aim of this chapter is to highlight the crucial need for any crisis
plan to have buy-in at the highest level of your company or organiza-
tion. Without the total support and full participation of the board, any
crisis plan is likely to fail. Sadly, too few organizations accept this and
even fewer practise it.
How it can all go wrong

ment in place and you are delighted with the spokesperson who will
confidently defend the reputation of your company. Nothing, you
think, has been left to chance. Wrong.
