Lucienne Rey is naturally interested in comparing different cul-
tures: her father is from the French part of Switzerland and her
mother is from the Italian part, and she grew up in the German-
speaking capital of Bern. After her studies in cultural geography she
focussed on the question of general perception in the different lan-
guage groups of Switzerland. She is the author of two books on vari-
ous ideas of nature and their development in the German, French
and Italian part of Switzerland. She currently works for the Educa-
tion and Development Foundation (Bern), focusing on North-South
questions, intercultural activities, and sustainability.
Concetta M. Stewart worked at AT&T for twelve years in interna-
tional market development, planning, customer and market re-
search, and product management and introduction. She received her
Ph.D. in Communication and Information Studies from Rutgers Uni-
versity, and is now a faculty member in the School of Communica-
tions and Theater at Temple University, where she teaches courses in
telecommunications, policy and organizational communication. She
is also a member of the Graduate Faculty in Mass Media and Com-
munications, In addition, she is a Senior Associate for the American
Association of Higher Education’s TLT Group. She has served on the
editorial boards of several journals including Academy of Manage-
ment Executive, Journal of Applied Communication Research, and
Studies in Technological Innovation and Human Resources.
She lives in Ringoes, New Jersey with her husband Thom Poo-
ley, daughters Sarah and Frances, and three cats. She and Thom
enjoy jazz, British sports cars, and travel—her daughters enjoy the
travel.
Josef Wehner is a sociologist at the Institute for Autonomous In-
telligent Systems, German National Center of Information Tech-
nology (GMD). His research focuses on the relationships between
the evolution of media and the modernization of society. His cur-
rent study deals specifically with the loss and recovery of social
boundaries in the modern world. His publications include Ende der
Massenkultur? Visionen und Wirklichkeit der neuen elektronischen
Medien (Frankfurt/M.: Campus 1997) with Werner Rammert et al.;
Wissensmaschinen. Soziale Konstruktion eines technischen Medi-
