               Tips for Success

Whatever the type of project or interaction you determine at this point, build it into project plans.
Again, glance ahead to Figure 12-12 later in this chapter. Rather than hazy Gantt charts where you
guess and approximate, set some measureable objectives.
Always emphasize that DG is there to help. It will not hurt to remind stakeholders you are looking
for the “net zero” or minimal impact. This is not anything newdit is different.
               Activity: Define Sustaining Requirements

At this point in the development of the DG road map, the team may have some idea of the extent of
changes required to implement and sustain DG, especially if the change capacity and IMM assessments
have already been done. It will be important at this stage to identify what needs to be put in place in order
to maintain data governance for the long term. Being able to maintain DG requires that your OCM plan
be attuned to the organization’s culture. The work done during this activity to identify the sustaining
requirements provides insight into how those cultural elements need to be addressed.
Although at this point we may have some idea of the extent of the change, we will need to be sure
we have developed a specific analysis of the change impact on the stakeholder groups. The sustaining
requirements are developed based on the analysis of all affected parties. What usually comes from the
analysis are the following needs for the sustaining phase:
               • Communication plans
               • Education and training plans (by type of stakeholder and degree of impact)
               • Sponsorship expectations and guidelines
               • Individual coaching plans for executives to enable them to effectively support required changes
               • A resistance management plan and tactics
               • Process and policy alignment plans
               • Organizational realignment plans for structure, roles
All of these elements together form the basis for the change management plan described later in this
               chapter.
               Activity Summary Table

Objective Identify the elements that must be addressed in the OCM
plan if data governance is to be sustainable in the
                                            organization for the long term.
Purpose Ensure all aspects of sustaining DG have been
considered and will be addressed as part of an OCM plan.
Inputs Change capacity assessment, stakeholder analysis, IMM
                                            assessment (if available)
Tasks 1. Review/perform stakeholder analysis (or perform in
                                               parallel).
                                            2. Review other IM assessments.
                                            3. Execute change capacity assessment (if not already
                                               done).
                                            4. Identify change management resources required.
