Acknowledgments

This book is the culmination of over a quarter century of research
and practice during which I have been influenced, inspired, and
supported by many talented people. The following is only a partial
list of collaborators and contributors, my fellow travelers on this
               excellent journey.
First, I would like to thank Tai Soda, my editor; Stephen Smith
and the rest of the capable production team at McGraw-Hill; and
Joanna Pomeranz and Nancy Dimitry of D&P Editorial Services. Thanks
also to Warner North, Bill Balson, David Cohan, and Ken Wapman of
Decision Focus, and the many other pioneers who contributed to the
first edition of Design for Environment. Second, I salute the vision of
my former colleagues at Battelle—Wayne Simmons, Bruce Vigon, Jeff
McDaniel, Ben Parker, Dave Spitzley, Joyce Cooper, Vinay Gadkari,
Tiffany Brunetti, Ken Humphreys, Marylynn Placet, Bob Quinn, and
others who helped me to develop the Life Cycle Management practice.
Third, I am indebted to the many clients and consulting partners of
Eco-Nomics LLC, including John Stowell, Bonnie Nixon, John Harris,
Bert Share, Les Artman, Alan Dudek, Jim Thomas, Jon Low, Steve
Poltorzycki, Bob Axelrod, Steve Hellman, and Amy Goldman, who
helped give me the opportunity to practice what I preached.
In recent years I have been fortunate to work with an outstand-
ing group of faculty members, students, researchers, and adminis-
trators at The Ohio State University, who have helped to establish
and grow the Center for Resilience. These include Marc Posner,
Suvrajeet Sen, Dave Woods, Julie Higle, Rajiv Ramnath, Doug
Lambert, Keely Croxton, Tim Pettit, Emrah Cimren, Kieran Sikdar,
Joe Bolinger, Anil Baral, Cullen Naumoff, Ravishankar Rajagopalan,
Maria Aguilera, Fernando Bernal, James Balch, Aparna Dial, Greg
Washington, and Bud Baeslack, among others. The most profound
influence in my recent career has been Bhavik Bakshi, co-founder
of the Center for Resilience, and an international thought leader in
the field of life-cycle assessment. Contributions from Bhavik and his
research group appear in many chapters of this book.

                                                                      xvii
