glucose monitoring with the introduction of OneTouch metering tech-
nology, which eliminated wiping and timing procedures. The blood
glucose meter device itself was reengineered to meet the Restrictions
on Hazardous Substances (ROHS) directive of the European Union,
even though medical devices are exempt. In addition, the carrying
case was redesigned to eliminate PVC, latex, and phthalate plasticiz-
ers, as shown in Figure 14.1. These changes enabled easier access to
European and Asian markets and are a clear demonstration of the
company’s green commitment. Finally, J&J offers to take back the
blood glucose meters at their end-of-life as part of the company’s
global product stewardship efforts. In 2007 over 700,000 LifeScan
meters were taken back for recycling.
There are numerous other examples of DFE achievements across
J&J’s many divisions, including raw material source reduction, pack-
aging avoidance, asset recovery, solvent reduction, and toxics elimi-
nation. The company’s leadership in corporate responsibility has
earned it considerable recognition, including membership in the Dow
Jones Sustainability Indexes and selection as one of the Global 100
               Most Sustainable Companies.
