contractors collect, process, and recycle or dispose of the products,
while protecting patient confidentiality and privacy. This provides a
valued service to patients and communities, while ensuring envi-
ronmentally responsible waste treatment. Building on the original
initiative, Baxter recently launched a similar pilot program for renal
products supplied to home patients. Due to the success of this pilot,
beginning in 2008 the company will offer waste-collection service to
all renal home patients in Ireland. The two programs will benefit
approximately 600 customers and recover about two metric tons of
waste annually.
Integrated “Lean and Clean” Engineering
Baxter has been a leader in applying “lean” principles and Six Sigma
statistical engineering tools to its environmental programs. Baxter’s
approach is to integrate environmental, health, and safety (EHS) exper-
tise into Lean manufacturing initiatives to prevent negative environ-
mental consequences and to identify opportunities for environmental
improvement—known as “Lean and Clean.” The approach includes
• Modifying traditional Lean tools, such as value-stream maps,
by adding environmental aspects
• Applying Lean tools to such EHS processes as wastewater
treatment to drive efficiencies
• Integrating traditional pollution-prevention techniques into
Lean and Clean tools to provide a systematic way of finding
opportunities.
For example, at Baxter’s facility in Waluj, India, a Lean exercise
that focused on water usage helped reduce wastewater effluent by
40%. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has requested
Baxter’s help to help build a Lean/Six Sigma toolkit for businesses to
use in integrating Lean principles into EH&S initiatives.
Baxter also is focused on the Lean and environmental performance
of its suppliers. Through its activities with the Green Sup pliers Net-
work, U.S. EPA, and the U.S. Department of Commerce collaboration
with private industry, Baxter urges its suppliers to be trained in Lean
and Clean manufacturing, which creates opportu nities for greater effi-
ciency, cost savings, and waste- and resource-reduction.
