Fearless Career Change
The test results should be construed not as the
final answer as to whether you should make
the choice to own your own business, but
rather as a tool to show you the strengths
you already possess and the areas you may want
to improve on. It’s up to you to assess the
results, and it’s up to you to decide whether own-
ing your own business is really right for you at
this time in your life.
Remember, both the self-assessment and the chart are not
meant to be scientifically conclusive in any way but are instead tools
for research and self-awareness. The assessment is best used if you
put it into action.
For example, if you find that you have several areas that need
improvement, you can learn them from a book, a correspondence
course, an online class, or perhaps a night class. You can even hire
an executive coach to get you up to par on your leadership abilities
and required skills.
Before we go any further, let’s see how you match up to some
of the classic traits, tasks, and obstacles inherent in the process of
running a business or a private consulting practice.
Please answer the following questions by putting a check in the box
to the left of the statement if the statement is true for you. You can-
not “fail” the test, so take a moment to reflect and answer each
question as accurately as possible.
❑ I’m a risk taker.
❑ I am very independent minded.
❑ I am results oriented.
❑ I consistently demand the best from myself.
❑ I am comfortable researching or asking others about things I
don’t know.
❑ I trust action more than analysis.
❑ I can overcome failure and recommit my energies to success.
