For example, Carl, our marketing intern, might fashion an
agreement with his employer to list the time he spent there as mar-
keting associate rather than intern. Gary, who volunteered at a TV sta-
tion, might negotiate with the station manager for a title like cam-
era operator rather than volunteer. Here are some titles for volunteer
and internship positions that may be appropriate for a résumé:
• Assistant to the director
• Associate instructor
• Biochemist associate
• Customer service associate
• Executive or personal assistant
• Fashion technologist
• Financial consultant
• Human resources assistant
• Laboratory technician
• Networking assistant
• Property management assistant
• Public relations coordinator
• Software consultant
• Technology specialist
Strategy 7. Just Dive In!
Sometimes a career change does not require special study, train-
ing, or strategy. There are instances when all that’s required is guts.
I call this method Just Dive In! For example, Rita, who was “between
jobs” and working as a house cleaner, took the plunge when she
submitted her first work of fiction for publication. Once she took
that risk, she began submitting her work to a myriad of publication
sources, and finally, she wrote two books that were handled by a
major publisher.
In another instance of Just Dive In! is Jennifer, an interior
designer, who came upon a way she thought women could gain
