Fearless Career Change
ups and downs of running your own business. Resources will be
offered pertaining to how to take full advantage of the ample finan-
cial and professional support available from the government for
which you are, most likely, eligible. You’ll even get a taste for writing
a marketing and business plan.
Combining Fearless Career Change
Strategies for Maximum Impact
Although we’ve considered each of the strategies on its own thus
far, the fastest results tend to arise from combining two or more of
the approaches. For example, you might take a short-term series of
courses and volunteer in your new field, to make your credentials
and expertise that much more attractive to your new employer.
Blending strategic education with a well-aimed internship
could even land you a permanent job at the organization for which
you’re an intern. An entrepreneur who takes some business classes
to augment his or her transferable skills is likely to be that much
more well rounded in executing his or her new endeavor.
One of my clients combined strategic education (enrollment
in a graduate course), short-term education (a certificate earned
by attending a number of seminars), an internship at a well-
respected institution, and volunteering for a community group
when he made his radical career change.
Which strategies you choose to utilize depends upon the
money and time you wish to invest, the requirements of your new
position in the real-world marketplace, and just how much of a
foundation you wish to lay out before launching your new career.
A good deal will also depend on your ability and willingness to take
risks—to just dive in.
You must be curious about the details of many of the stories
and concepts touched on in this chapter. In Chapter 6, you’ll get
blow-by-blow accounts of how real people transformed their special
calling into a way of life.
