CONSTRUCTION SAFETY CODES, STANDARDS, AND REGULATIONS 3.31

The A10 Committee of the American National Standards Institute on safety in con-
struction and demolition operations has produced the following safety standards.
A10.1 Planning for Construction Safety and Health. (Under development)

A10.2 Safety, Health, and Environment Training. (Under development)
A10.3-2006 Powder-Actuated Fastening Systems. Safety requirements for a “powder-
actuated fastening system that propels a stud, pin, fastener or other object for the purpose
of affixing it by penetration to hard structural surface” are given.
A10.4-2007 Personnel Hoists and Employee Elevators. Safety requirements are given
for the design, construction, operation, inspection, and maintenance of hoists and elevators
that are not part of building but are installed for use during construction and are used to
             transport employees.

             A10.5-2006 Material Hoists
A10.6-2006 Demolition Operations. Safety requirements for demolition of structures are
provided. The details of the engineering survey before commencement of demolition are
given. Provisions for general protection, catch platforms, scaffolds, and warning devices
are dealt with. Requirements of fire protection and control are given. Removal of structural
elements, tank, vessel, machinery, and use of flame cutting are discussed.

A10.7-2005 Transportation, Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives and
Blasting Agents. The standard deals with the minimum standard set forth for the con-
struction industry for the transportation, storage, handling, and use of commercial explo-
sive materials; firing the blast and procedures after blasting are given.

A10.8-2001 Scaffolding. Provisions for the construction, erection, operation, mainte-
nance, and use of scaffolds in the construction, demolition, and maintenance of buildings
are given. Requirements for platform units and 20 types of scaffolds are provided.

A10.9-2004 Concrete Construction and Masonry Work. Provisions are given for in-site
construction of concrete and masonry work including prestressing by post- and preten-
sioning, lift slab, tilt-up construction, and slipform.

A10.10-2004 Temporary and Portable Space Heating Devices. Provisions for the instal-
lation, operation, and maintenance of space heating devices and equipment (temporary and
portable designs) are given. Requirements for solid-fuel heaters, liquid-fuel heaters, natural
gas heaters, and liquefied petroleum gas heaters are provided.
A10.11-1998 Personnel and Debris. Safety requirements for the selection, installation,
and use of personnel and debris nets during construction are provided. The standard deals
with the conditions where nets are required, materials and design of nets, and factors affect-
             ing net life.

             A10.12-2005 Excavation
A10.13-2001 Steel Erection. The standard deals with the safety requirements for han-
dling, erecting, fitting, fastening, and dismantling structural steel at a construction site.
Requirements for welding and cutting, scaffolding and safety nets are given. It deals with
