ITER – International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Chapter | 3 65

The second quality class includes the following reactor structures, systems
             and components:

             l SIC-2 items,
l items belonging to other SICs, whose failure/malfunction makes the ma-
chine inoperative for more than 3 weeks or results in a loss of obtained
                experimental data, and
l items belonging to other SICs, whose failure/malfunction would lead to
more than €500,000 expenses, needed to resume operations.
The third quality class includes the following reactor structures, systems and
             components:
             l SRs,
l Non–SRs whose failure would not cause a loss of obtained experimental
data or would result in less than €500,000 expenses, needed to resume
                operations.
Other reactor structures, systems and components fall within the fourth
             quality class.
A list of safety measures that should be implemented in the design of the
reactor structures, systems and components is developed for each quality class.
Safety measures for quality classes 1 and 2 and safety class 2 include the
             following:
l Project review at every project stage, including control of findings made by
                independent organisations and supervising authorities.
l Development of an organisational document that defines interfaces between
the officers of the organisation in charge of design and between suppliers
and contractors for every item to be designed (requirement 1.3).
l Documented validation of design personnel skills (requirement 1.4).
l Approval of employed computer software used at designing by IO.
Safety obligatory measures for components and elements of the quality
class 2 and safety class 3 include the following:
l Project review at every project stage.
l Development of an organisational document that defines interfaces between
the officers of the organisation in charge of design and between suppliers
and contractors for every item to be designed (requirement 1.3).
l Documented validation of design personnel skills (requirement 1.4).
l Approval of employed computer design software.
The only safety measure to be implemented in the design of quality class 3
structures, systems and components, except for SRs, is the documented valida-
tion of design personnel skills (requirement 1.4). No obligatory safety measures
are established for quality class 4 structures, systems and components.
