The Integrated Design Team

The four key participants of every integrated design team are the building or proj-
ect owner (or its designated representative), the architect, the mechanical engi-
neer (including typically HVAC and plumbing) and the builder or general con-
tractor. However, most successful high-performance projects have strong inputs
from a variety of other participants, depending on the nature and complexity of
the project, the specific sustainable goals sought, and local site and community
conditions.
The integrated design team (Fig. 3.5) consists of a wide range of specialties and
functions including:

■ Architect
■ General contractor
■ Stakeholders from the owner’s side, including project manager
■ Structural engineer/façade consultant (for large buildings)
■ Mechanical engineer
■ Civil engineer
■ Electrical engineer/technology consultant
■ Landscape architect
■ Interior designer
